SAXIFRAGA TOURAN 'LARGE WHITE'

One plant that particularly caught my eye when mooching around the Royal Horticultural Society garden centre the other day selecting plants for the new mixed (but mostly hardy herbaceous perennials) border that I am about to create was Saxifraga 'Touran' Large White.   The mound of white flowers was dazzling and even though, close up on camera, they might seem a little bedraggled, that is down to the heavy rain we've been having lately.  It's a bonus that it is evergreen and therefore should not die back and disappear like many herbaceous perennials do in winter.  The plant is full of healthy, fat buds, as you can plainly see.

The pot is a 2L, 6in diameter pot (10cm) which will give you an idea of the size of the flowers.  The details on the plant label are as follows:

Saxifraga Touran Large White

Masses of dainty, white flowers during April and May every year above a neat cushion of evergreen foliage.  Hardy and perennial.

Height: 15cm (6").  Spread: 40cm (16").

Position:  Partly shaded in any well-drained soil.  Will also do well in full sun, given a soil that is moisture-retentive during summer.

Planting instructions and aftercare: Water your plant before removing from the pot.  Prepare the planting area and enrich with compost and fertilizer.  Ensure the hole is wide and deep enough so as not to damage the roots when planting.  Firm soil after planting and water regularly during the first year.  Trim off faded flowering stems in summer to tidy up.
