CLIFTON PARK, ROTHERHAM

I visited Clifton Park, Rotherham, yesterday with a group of friends.   It was an intermittently rainy day with fine spells between and from the entrance it just seemed like a lot of wide open spaces and trees.  Although I admit I didn't see too much of the park, there are flower beds, a rockery, Roman ruins, and lots of places to entertain families with young children.  As I arrived my first interest was the trees.  Always trees.  And then the walled garden.

While the house isn't very exciting from an architectural point of view, in my opinion, it is now a museum with lots of fascinating things to see inside.  There is also a cafĂ© and a shop with some beautiful things to buy at very reasonable prices.

Amazingly, astoundingly, the official websites give little or no information regarding who actually owned the house originally and I had to go to resort, as I often do, to good old Wiki.  It was built in 1783 and designed by architect, John Carr of York (external link).  It was once owned by the Walker family who were industrialists involved in steel and iron manufacture.  The Municipal Borough of Rotherham bought the house and grounds in 1891.  £3million was used in renovation and improving the house and grounds.
