New Dawn climbing rose |
New Dawn is a little thorny, like most roses, but the growing habit is quite loose and in some ways it looks like a rambler. However, unlike ramblers, New Dawn is repeat flowering, and even better, it will grow in light or partial shade and is unfussy about soil. Mine is grown in neutral to slightly acid soil, against the north side of a 'shadow' fence which allows some light and air through (circulation of air helps keep it healthy) from the south. It also gets afternoon sun. It is vigorous in nature and can grow to 3.5 metres if unpruned.

Although occasionally the young tips of stems get attacked with aphids, they have never been a problem. I have known it once be affected by black spot but again that has not become a problem. I spray it only when necessary and it has rarely been needed. I think the change in fencing from solid to more open has made a great difference to the rose's health.
