GARDENERS' WORLD MONTY DON GROWS NEW DAWN AT LONGMEADOW

I was watching Gardeners' World the other day and was delighted to see that Monty Don was promoting the climbing rose, New Dawn, which he is growing at Longmeadow.  I have grown that particular rose for decades, in one garden or another, and always will, I hope.  New Dawn is a lovely soft pink with glossy leaves and a pretty yellow centre when the flowers open fully (making it attractive to pollinators like bees). Its fragrance is delicate and sweet.

New Dawn is a little thorny, like most roses, but the growing habit is quite loose and in some ways it looks like a rambler.  However, unlike ramblers, New Dawn is repeat flowering, and even better, it will grow in light or partial shade and is unfussy about soil.  Mine is grown in neutral to slightly acid soil, against the north side of a 'shadow' fence which allows some light and air through (circulation of air helps keep it healthy) from the south. It also gets afternoon sun.   It is vigorous in nature and can grow to 3.5 metres if unpruned.

New Dawn is an award winning rose which has received the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM) (external link).

Although occasionally the young tips of stems get attacked with aphids, they have never been a problem.  I have known it once be affected by black spot but again that has not become a problem.  I spray it only when necessary and it has rarely been needed.  I think the change in fencing from solid to more open has made a great difference to the rose's health.

New Dawn is a sport of Dr Van Fleet rose and was discovered and patented (the first rose to be patented) by Henry Dreer in 1931.
